Nicks Story

48-year-old Nick Bewlay from East Ring, Yorkshire had his life changed forever 8 years ago when a car accicent left him with a C3/C4 break in his spine which resulted in him being left paralysed from the chest down.
Prior to his accident, Nick had been a great outdoors person who loved watching motorcross and going for long cross country walks with his family and dog.  Despite his life changing injury Nick was determined to get back to his outdoor lifestyle and once he was released from hospital he set about looking for a powerchair that would make this ambition a reality as he explains:

Nicks Story

“I knew what I was looking for but to be honest I was not sure if it even existed. With the help of my friends Nick and Jan Bendell I found All Terrain Wheelchairs and their range of powerchairs looked perfect”.  Nick and Jan contacted the company and arranged for someone to visit Nick at home to carry out an assessment and allow him to try out a selection of models.  “From my first phone call, everyone at ATW has been incredibly helpful.  When Richard visited me, there was no hard sell, he took the time to listen to what I had to say and what I was looking to achieve from the chair and then explained the different models and which one he thought would best meet my requirements.  I have now known Richard, Cheryl and the rest of the team at All Terrain Wheelchairs for over 6 years, and in that time I have always been very impressed with their attention to detail and the level of care and support they offer as part of the after sales service.  I would also like to take this opportunity to say a huge thank you to my friends Nick and Jan.  Not only did they help me find All Terrain Wheelchairs but they also paid for my chair which is something I will always be eternally grateful for” explained Nick.

Following his assessment Nick decided to go for a Frontier X5.  “My Frontier X5 was fantastic and never let me down.  It enabled me to get back to doing what I love, watching motocross, walking the dog and enjoying country walks with family and friends” continued Nick.
Nick & his Dog
After 6 years, Nick decided it might be time to upgrade his Frontier X5 for a new model and got back in touch with All Terrain Wheelchairs and when he was told about the Frontier V6 he knew that would be his next powerchair. A unique feature of the Frontier V6 is that it is mid-wheel drive which makes it perfect for use in the great outdoors or in the home.  “I love the mid-wheel drive feature as it means the V6 literally turns on itself and as it has such a small turning circle it is very easy to manoeuvre within the home or when out and about.  However, it is equally at home when I am navigating kerbs, thick mud, sand, gravel or snow, I just have to remember to clean it off before going back into the house or I get in trouble!  The rise and tilt function is also great as it enables me to talk to people face to face in social situations and is even useful at the dentist as I just recline the chair and let my dentist get on with his work!”

The Frontier V6 is unlike any other mid-wheel drive powerchair currently available in the UK.  With a turning circle of just 21.5” which is achieved by turning on its own axis, users can go on long country walks regardless of the terrain with friends or family or visit shops, restaurants etc with the peace of mind that they will be able to safely and confidently manoeuvre themselves through thick mud or in confined spaces.  With the rugged design which every ATW powerchairs is known for combined with a battery distance of up to 12 miles (19km) and top speed of 6.2mph (10km/h) users can enjoy an active outdoor lifestyle just like Nick.
“We are delighted that Nick is so pleased with his second powerchair from All Terrain Wheelchairs.  Every powerchair we supply is bespoke as every client has specific individual requirements.  As Nick only has minimal movement of 10mm in his left arm we installed a bespoke arm rest to prevent his arm falling off and help him with controlling the chair.  In addition to the bespoke arm rest, Nick’s V6 also features special leg supports to stop his legs falling off the chair” commented Director Richard Kusnierz.
A final word from Nick: “I would urge anyone that is looking for a powerchair that can tackle rough terrain to get in touch with All Terrain Wheelchairs.  My powerchairs have enabled me to once again live my life to the full as opposed to just existing and that is something you can never put a price on”.
