Bruno's Story Bruno's Story

Bruno Hanson from Cornwall is the world number 1 adaptive surf champion and has just returned from the United States where he won his third consecutive ISA World Adaptive Surfing Championships.  Bruno is also the proud owner of an Extreme X8 powerchair from All Terrain Wheelchairs.

Born in Zimbabwe, Bruno discovered his love of water at Lake Kariba on the borders of Zambia and Zimbabwe. One day he paddled out across the lake on a windsurf board, catching a tiny wave, and he knew this is what he wanted to do. At that moment, Bruno decided he never wanted to leave the water again and fell in love with windsurfing to ultimately become a world champion.
However, Bruno’s dreams of a career in windsurfing nearly came to an end after travelling to Indonesia in 1994 as a captain on a surf charter boat in Sumatra.  He flew back to South Africa and on the way to the airport to return to continue to captain the yacht he was involved in a serious car accident which left him paralysed from the waist down.  “I was determined that my disability would not stop me enjoying life and my love of the water” explained Bruno.  Once he had been released from hospital he set about rebuilding his life and that included getting back on a surf board.

Over the intervening years, Bruno had been using various manual wheelchairs but was tired of being pushed around on the beach and having to rely on others as he would often get stuck in the sand as he explains: “I could never just ‘go to the beach’ I always had to wait for a friend to be free to accompany me which was incredibly frustrating.  So, I decided to do something about it as I was sure there must be solutions out there that can cope with the sandy beaches”
After searching online, Bruno came across All Terrain Wheelchairs (www.allterrainwheelchairs.co.uk) and promptly got in touch with Richard and Cheryl.  “From my initial enquiry, they were incredibly prompt in getting back to me and that was a major factor is my decision to look at their chairs as opposed to other manufacturers”.  Richard from All Terrain Wheelchairs arranged a convenient date for a demonstration and visited Bruno in Cornwall so he could try it out for himself.  “From the moment I tried the Extreme X8 for the first time I knew I wanted one.  The way it performed on the sand was phenomenal and I knew it would not only give me peace of mind and independence but friends and family could relax knowing I would no longer get stuck in the sand".

What difference has Bruno’s ATW powerchair made to him:
“It is just fantastic! I can now go to the beach and surf whenever I want and the independence and confidence it has given me is hard to put into words.  Another benefit of the Extreme X8 is that I now use my car far less for local trips to the shops or to see friends.  I would not hesitate in recommending All Terrain Wheelchairs to anybody that is looking for a powerchair that can get them out and about to places a standard chair is unable to cope with.  The performance of my Extreme X8 combined with the superb level of advice prior to buying my chair and the subsequent after sales service from the team at All Terrain Wheelchairs has only reinforced the fact that I made the right decision.  The chair has changed my life and I am sure it could do the same for others” You can read Bruno’s amazing story about how he overcame his disability, survived the 2002 Tsunami and became a world champion here: http://indonesiaexpat.biz/meet-the-expats/meet-bruno-hansen/
“Bruno s a truly inspirational guy.  The way he has overcome his terrible accident and injuries to become a world champion is amazing and a real lesson in how to remain positive and overcome adversity.  To hear we have helped him on his journey is incredibly rewarding” commented Richard Kusnierz, Director, All Terrain Wheelchairs.
